I never have my documents in my actual hands because 99% of the time Capt's don't ask for it, it's not required, and it's awkward when the captain goes to shake your hand and you can't because you have your license,passport, medical, and company ID in your hands. I have my documents on me and if asked I produce them with no fuss or surprise.
In fact, you should not just "inspect" the jumpseater's papers, but the FAA's as well. Make sure the number on their ID matches the number on their badge.
I always hand the Captain my license, medical, Company ID and jumpseat form before he/she has the chance to ask for it.
