I never have my documents in my actual hands because 99% of the time Capt's don't ask for it, it's not required, and it's awkward when the captain goes to shake your hand and you can't because you have your license,passport, medical, and company ID in your hands. I have my documents on me and if asked I produce them with no fuss or surprise.
It's not hard to have all in one hand. I'm new to this but think about it in terms of a fed riding along and you don't have your stuff out. Now YOU put the captain in the situation where they have to ask. Just have it out, it's not difficult.
