I just went through the school house on the 717 and the guy giving me my line check explained that currently when a probie pilot gets his 6 month check it's by an LCA in the jumpseat and the Captain gets a linecheck at the same time. The problem is that with certain categories, ie NYC, there are so many new hires that Captains are getting line checks too often because of the 6 month check. This will eliminate that. Take it for what it's worth.
The LCA in the JS works usually only when the probie has a line so it can be planned. When I was on reserve this past June the OE planner had to place a turn on my schedule to get the check done. In my case, the LCA was in the left seat for both legs...a MEX turn no less.
