I'm not a huge fan of this trend either, but if I had to guess part of it may be due to the fact that we no longer have turbo props and/or multi engine piston experience to bridge the gap between tooling around in a 152 and flying a jet.

Even just a few years ago the regionals were solid on 100 hours multi engine MINIMUM. What is it now? 25 hours or something absurdly low? I have an MEI and instructed in a twin to build multi hours. Now that doesn't make me Lord of the skies but I learned a lot teaching in a PA44 that helped with make the transition easier.
