If he goes guard/reserves he'll have to pay the severance back. I looked into that option when I was separating.
Rules must've changed since I left AD many moons ago-only had to be paid back if one retired from the reserves/guard. It's still well worth joining the reserves/guard as the payout & bennies outweigh the payback in the long run.
