In a word yes. What you want to make sure is you do not have a medical issue that would be disqualifying before you invest a lot of money and effort. If you went to an Aviation Medical Examiner (a civilian doctor certified by the FAA to give flight physicals) and explained the reason you want a physical, the two of you can decide what tests to run to make sure there is not an existing condition that could disqualify you in the future. At the very minimum I would do an EKG. Additionally, the AME will be able to issue you a Student Pilot License at the same time.
