As you all know by now, Spirit CEO Ben Baldanza stepped down this morning and was immediately replaced by Robert L. Fornaro, formerly of AirTran Airways. Your MEC has taken immediate steps to assess and respond to the situation.
MEC Chairman Capt. James Ackerman has reached out to our new CEO and expressed his congratulations as well as this pilot group’s commitment to working together to continue Spirit’s growth. We’ve also discussed the situation with Spirit COO John Bendoraitis and how we can all move forward.
Although it is tempting to speculate on what this change will mean for this airline and this pilot group, it is simply too early to tell. We will continue to work with management to achieve a new contract and continue Spirit’s success.
Your MEC chairman spoke to Ben Baldanza this morning to wish him well in his new endeavors. Ben wanted to express his pride in the pilot group and how, together, we created a whole new category of air travel. To quote him: “Spirit pilots are the most professional I’ve ever worked with in my entire career.”
