Depends on the day of the week and time of travel. You would use the employee travel portal to list for flights. They are color coded based on how open the flights are. You, as an employee travel under rev stbys and above buddy passes. If there are Airbus jumpseat is not bad. 2 avail on AA planes to pilots.
Example of LAX to DFW today (friday) looking at flights the next 2 have 50 open seats and around 6 or so people listed for stby and the 2 flights after that are basically oversold with people listed.
Checking in 24 hours out for the flights does help your chances but you start to become familar on how to predict loads and how to get around the easiest based on day of the week and time of travel.
