No, its the same way with UAL and Delta, typically there's no room left in the overhead bin after you finally get a seat. Then you have to check it and pick it up at baggage claim. Alaska and maybe Frontier is the only 2, who will let you check it and they'll bring it up the jet bridge.
At JetBlue we will also give you a gate claim tag. The problem our guys have run into at AA vs UA or DL is that once the agents decide the bins are full, they often insist on checking the bag without asking the Captain if there are any storage options first.
