Let me tell you how much Delta and CP's care about you and your family. I had a family emergency involving my 1yr old child three hours before the start of short call. The Doctor instructed me to call an ambulance and have my child taken to the closest childrens hospital. I Called the CP and he was so concerned and helpful that he removed me from short call without pay. Lost about 5hrs of pay and went to 69hrs for the month. Do you think if someone in management had a family emergency and couldn't go to work they would be docked a days pay? Turns out if you are based in LAX, SEA, or MSP state law requires them to use your sick leave to pay you. But if you are based in ATL Delta will be happy to save money on the back of your family emergency. I spoke with ALPA and they said contractually nothing can be done but the CP has the authority to make sure you are still paid. All of the Delta family crap is just that a bunch of propaganda. If the contract allows it they will do it. All of the new guys on here tell me if this treatment is inline with what you are told in indoc? I think you will able to answer the original question for yourself.
That sucks and I hope your child is healthy and doing well. I have to say I have had the opposite experience twice in my 15 years here. Two years ago, I was based in DTW on the 7ER. I had called in sick in Jan, Feb, and March for one 4 day trip each. I have two kids in elementary school and I kept getting a sinus infection. I went to quick care and had each episode verified but wasn't too proud of my reliability with Delta. In April, a car runs a red light and smashes into me and the family minivan and totals it a day before my next trip.
I called scheduling and told them the truth, I am not sick, but I can't come to work with everything I have to do with the insurance company and getting a car for my wife to drive while I'm gone. I'm sorry but I can't come to work tomorrow.
A few hours later, Len W, the CP or asst CP in DTW calls and asks me how I'm doing? I told him I was ok but frustrated about the accident. He says not to worry. He says "Why didn't you call in sick so you didn't lose any pay? I told him I didn't feel right about it. I've been sick every month this year. He says "but you had them all verified." He says if I go to quick care or the doctor and get a note, he will get me paid for the trip. I got a little choked up, after all the talk about sick leave abuse, and me missing my 4th trip of the year by mid April, that he was helping me like that. By that time my lower back and right hip were starting to get really stiff from the impact. I was standing on the brake, even though I had already stopped, as I watched the jack wagon barreling down on me.
Anyway, I'm sorry you had that experience, and you have to take care of your family first. You were penalized for being honest with the company and being a good Dad. That's not right.
