I worked with a few of "furloughed" guys from Polar during their so-called furloughed. IIRC, they got a chunk of back pay from that little maneuver.
The situation is now entirely different. Both Southern and Atlas are in the same union, and one that has a clear seniority list merger policy.
Most importantly, The IBT is very willing to file a single carrier petition, which ALPA is not.
Purchase completed in May (+/-). If necessary, the IBT files single carrier. In any case, the IBT presents the merged list to management. 9 months of negotiations, then to the arbitrator. Merged contract 3 months later.
The time line is pretty firm. Thank God that we are not ALPA.
