Because it proves you have the discipline, focus, and aptitude to get through the course and fly the plane on the line, even if it's not the exact same type you'll be assigned. It's the rationale that's been used for decades to justify hiring military pilots. Admittedly not a fail-safe screening tool but IMO more relevant than a lot of the stuff they seem to be looking for nowadays.
Your first sentence contradicts your initial post I responded to, unless I misunderstood.
I guess I meant to say, what does it matter if you're typed and current on an A320.
