Md-88's/90's are glass cockpits, just very old design. Displays are small and not very user friendly. Upgrade plan was scrapped due to inability of contractor to fulfill his obligations. 717 cockpit basically an MD-11 setup. Big screens and excellent information presentation.
Both airplanes have DEN layovers. Probably the biggest consideration is if you want to be based on the west coast-717 category in LAX is the only option.

Don't know about NYC 88, but ATL 88 used to have only ONE redeye in the whole bid package..... DEN to ATL. PAINFUL.
