Throwing money at the problem works, I'm a huge fan of the flow but unfortunately I can't afford a 65k paycut to take it right now without losing my home and car. I'm pretty sure there are many out there that feel the same way, until the pay or bonuses get better they'll have problems staffing the WOs and flow through airlines.
I'm sure the bean counters have figured out exactly what pay is required to attract the staffing they need if they really wanted to.
Throwing money might work for awhile, but you still have to remember there's only so many pilots left.
There only seems to be a couple of options left. One is for the Majors to allow a few contract carriers to go out of business and hope there pilots flood to their feed carriers. Another way is for the majors to purchase a few carriers to protect their feed.
In the end it will mean hopefully less regional flying and that might be good for everyone. You might in the future see all flying done by WO'ed carriers and pilots with seniority numbers flying for their respective mainline carrier.
