Actually, out of the 4 airlines I worked for I find Delta to be the most decent at this. Plenty of guys do their tours and go back.
CPO guys are on rotation, plenty of APD's recently left and all SLI's now are on a 5 year tours, CLCP on the ER is going, CCPSA is going as well.
Most of these are "for life" positions in the rest of the industry.

With that being said there are guys who'd rather fly the desk. Individuals, not the rule.
