Ahh that makes a lot of sense...well this has been an interesting view on things and maybe my best bet is to pay for most of my training while working as an engineer - I can always re-evaluate as I go.
You might find that your flying bug is satiated for a good long time with this path. I did the same - PPL, IFR, multi, commercial, homebuilts, aerobatics, and more. The engineer streak in me was satisfied by building a plane and designing the systems that go into it. I may yet end up at a regional, and if/when I do I'll still have my own plane and be debt-free thanks to a "starter" career in (software) engineering.
I'm not suggesting that this is the only (or best) way to go, but it's been a good ride for me.
