That's funny. I didn't start flying until 2009. I flew NDB approaches almost daily during my instrument training. I flew IFR with a single VOR and no DME. We always referenced paper charts. You make it sound like these are decades-old training methods that are no longer used. Not everyone forks out the cash to learn in a glass panel Cessna.
