The whole volunteering thing is ridiculous. I'm a regional captain, so I don't get many days off as it is. I commute, and that eats an average of four of those days off per month. Plus I have a family that I need to remind what I look like on what few days off I do get at home. So, when the hell do I have time to volunteer?! I'm going to just count making my own dinner at my own home twice a month as 'volunteered in the soup kitchen'.
It all went downhill when "Human Resources" having so much say in the hiring process became a thing. Get those clowns out of the picture, and we'd only be better off for it.
Not going to pretend to understand your particular situation, but I too found myself in your exact predicament, family, reserve Capt., little time, and commuting, and made sure to volunteer. It is life changing and wonderful when shared with the kids. I, however, did not do it to land the job, rather as a desire to overcome my selfishishness, it helps. Good luck and I agree some of the best service is being a better mother/father.
