Now this example is from years ago and I know does not always apply however; My father went Left Seat L188 to Left seat DC8 but had previous DC8 right seat time. A lot of guys did NOT make it! Also, to move up to the widebody you needed time in type so although he could hold the DC10 and 747 he had to fly right seat in it first.
I would think that insurance, and the major airlines decisions, might have more to do with it.
I am not sure what Piedmont is doing.
Pdt is upgrading you directly to the jet if u want it.. Honestly, the dash is a much harder plane to fly than any jet I have flown.. Yes the dash is a little more forgiving when getting configured and stabilized but there is a lot going on in the cockpit.. The dash is a handful during a v1 cut..
Mach Tuch?? I highly doubt 99.999999 percent of line pilots have experienced it except in the sim if it's in the training program.. Same with buffeting.. I didn't know you'll fly with the clacker going off all the time...
That being said, there are a lot crews having issues with high altitude stalls out there... Republublich had had several low altitude stalls while on approach.. Thes have been occurring with crews that are long time jet operators.
