Let an "old guy" give some recommendation about when to start the APU on all airplanes.

1. It takes forever to cool a cabin once it's warmed up.
2. If the APU doesn't start it has to be written up, there will be a maintenance delay and possibly a turn down of the airplane. Find out early that it may not start.

And the most important reason is...

3. On some airplanes there's no water pressure until the pneumatics is pressurized. Can't make coffee (or tea for you more modern pilots) for Captain without it.
