It's the dire folks who tell me "If you attempt Delta coming off the street from Skywest, you'll never make it...etc etc etc" that can really make the choice tough. Do you mind if I ask you at your airline, are they hiring off the street people? Or currently, between military and preferential, are there few openings for OTS?

I'm at Delta and am a 100% civilian OTS hire. The last 2 years have seen almost a perfectly balanced 50/50 mix of civilian/military hires. I'm living proof that having a positive attitude and not letting this industry get under your skin can have good results. Try to expand your experiences and resume while at your regional but most importantly don't let anyone deter you from your career goals. Let the naysayers roll right off your skin and onto the floor where they belong.

For the record I had close to a dozen Skywest people in my new hire class. That's more proof that what you've been told about going to Delta from there is just a load of bull.
