You're either referring to the Restricted ATP (141 university flight program and military), or the sim training during airline ground school counting towards a few hours. I don't know much about the latter, but as far as I know just about every regional will take anyone who would be legally qualified by the end of sim training.

That being said, sims won't help with cross country.
