That's gonna suck big time if you start on call at 3AM. Means you'll have to leave home at 2AM just to be within range if they call you at 3AM. You could do this 6 days in a row and not get called once, but you'll spend a lot of time and gas driving all over, just so you don't get burned by an exactly 2 hour call out.
I flew with someone who lives right at 2 hours from base and just by hearing it described to me, it sounded stressful, and he didn't even have to drive closer.
Everyone's situation is different and I realize packing up and moving is probably not an option, but in my opinion your idea seems just as stressful as a traditional commute.
