It doesn't have to be on Day 1, more like the first couple weeks. If you want your immediate family to have health benefits, you need their DOB and SSN. By inputting them in the benefits section they will be automatically added to travel benefits. You can also add parents, step-parents, domestic partner, etc...to the travel benefits section and all you need is full name and birthday, no other documentation required.
Delta goes over all of this in the first couple days so no huge rush.
