Speaking of all this, it seems like pilots would benefit largely from bases having a larger variety of flying. For example, there are complaints about SFO lines. Why not have SFO 737 lines that go to the caribbean as longer trips and EWR 737 lines that go to Hawaii? Or for the 756 in SFO/LAX have some W trips? ALPA scheduling guys don't have a lot of say in how the trips are built, or who gets the flying. Safety, and fatigue, yes. Otherwise, not so much.
BTW, that has been tried. What happens is this, EWR or IAD is a 5 day trip or more to the islands. No one wants those trips, they are too long, can't trade, can't drop. So it goes to SL. Many times reserves don't have that much availability, so the trip gets split. Guess who flies the west coast to Hawaii portion of the trip? Yup, SFO or LAX reserves...
