The way I read the offer letter is that we will start on May 3rd and not see anything until June 1st.
That sounds about right.
In addition, the paycheck on the first of the month is 50% of monthly guarantee (35 hours) from the prior month so the following check on June 16 will be much larger to reflect training pay for May.

I think there's an advance payment the day you start that is later deducted from your first paycheck. $750 rings a bell but not sure.
I'm pretty sure that is not the case anymore.
