Depends on your seniority on the list. I was about 70% when they started the pre-assigned RAP B.S. I was always able to proffer out of it (usually a PM ready shift) or get a later trip.
It also matters where you commute from. I live in a very commutable city with 12-14 flights to DFW and ORD per day. I've never had to fly in a day early or stay a day late.
Commuting to reserve ain't no picnic, but it's not the worst thing in the world either.
As a junior line holder, I have averaged 13 days off.
I agree, commuting isn't bad depending on the city. MCO-JFK/LGA was fairly easy and painless. MCO-DFW was never going to happen, even for a jumpseat. I ended up moving and has made a world of a difference.
Now even though scheduled 11 days off, if i pick up OT flying maybe 9/10 days off that month but some months i can wiggle 13-15 days off if i don't get used on a given day.
