If that's the case you might see if you can get back in the LTD program, perhaps even pleading ignorance about what it was all about when you opted out. The LTD program is a great benefit. I'm retired from active duty, and am very close to having to use it. FAA approval is currently being processed for a medical issue. $96,000 a year, tax free, will go a long way to maintaining my current lifestyle (simply rob stay in my house, etc) if I lose my medical. It used to be opt in, but so many did not because they did not understand the value of this program until they needed it. Once out it was very hard to get back in because they had to go through an insurance medical exam, which many could not pass due to cholesterol reading, prior history of anything. During the last contract negotiations the company agreed to enroll all new hires automatically to avoid this situation.
