I've always wondered. Unless you speak Arabic, how would you know that you heard Arabic on an airplane? If I speak fluent Urdu and spoke it and asked what language one thinks they just heard: Farsi, Pashtun, Arabic, or Urdu? I think most people would say Arabic because anything that sounds like dirka dirka is probably Arabic?
Every single article that has these kinds of stories the accusation is that it was always Arabic that was spoken. Either the US is now full of Arabic scholars, or there is a whole lot of generalizations going on.
All that said it's probably not a good idea to call an uncle in Baghdad while on an airplane in the US. For that matter it's not a good idea to call while on an airplane because no one around you wants to hear your personal conversations. Yes, the 'landing sucked and pilot bounced it,' but the person picking you up most likely doesn't really care.
