Having been on reserve the last 6 months as an FO I will not upgrade to captain until I have enough junior to me where I won't be on reserve ever. I know many before me spent several years on reserve (my hats off to you) but I've had enough. Reserve at Mesa is absolutely horrible (I've been at 3 regionals including Mesa.) I'd rather nail my pecker to a stump with a railroad spike than to speak to crew tracking. Thank goodness I have a line in May.
I agree endless reserve is no good, however the few months I spent on reserve at Mesa weren't all that bad. Most of it was in PHX and I always bid the PM shift. I would commute in early the first day, take a nap at the crashpad, hit the gym, grab some lunch, and then usually I'd have something lined up for that afternoon/evening on my schedule. And 9/10 they would release me early on the last day so I could make my commute home.
However it is very nice upgrading into a line on the 175 and not having to sit reserve
