Two military buds of mine have applied to Delta and other airlines. One went to SWA (no Delta interview offer yet, and even if given one probably won't change at this point). The other has had an interview with United, one scheduled for FedEx and another with SWA. He's gotten the offer from United so far. My point being, what's with Delta? What's with Delta is they are hiring lots of highly qualified applicants, they have tons of them. They can't hire every single "highly qualified" applicant out there. I was impressed with all of my fellow new hires both military and civilian...even my fellow, lowly 28-32 year old hires.
They should go to wherever they get the first class date. Then, if they get offers elsewhere, they have a decision to make. You can leave one major to go to another, don't fall into the sunk cost fallacy that you can't leave once you've picked a job. Two of AAL classmates left after 1-1.5 years to go to FedEx, one of my classmates had left UAL after 9 months to come to AAL. There are people leaving every airline to go to another right now. If they really want Delta, then they'll leave when offered a class date.
