I wouldn't put too much hope in the FAA doing much as they have a dual mandate to regulate and "promote" aviation in the US. That makes them shakedown the companies that can pay with fines and "work with" the companies that cut so many corners their flying in circles.
I'm afraid you are mistaken. After the crash of ValuJet 592, President Clinton signed the FAA Reauthorization Act of 1996. In the act, the dual mandate was removed.
Today's mandate reads as follows -"provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world." Nowhere does the words 'promote aviation' appear any longer.
Ask your management, I think some of them managed ValuJet if I'm not mistaken.
