About 10% of the pilot group is unavailable to fly the line when we are in a growth mode. Once the growth stops we always have a instant surplus of pilots. 1000 might be high but if training events were cut in half it would be 650 pilots plus however many instructors they could furlough back to the line.
My answer was in response to going to all one payrate not multiple bands as United has. We are partially banded already. Shifting to a UAL system would have a minor impact.
Now factor in the retirement numbers and get back to me. It is a non issue staffing wise. NOW is the time to do it if there ever was. The moment we stagnate again, you will be right, but again those are dice I would roll in a heartbbeat.
