My understanding was that a successful single-carrier petition would result in a single bargaining unit (union) and a single contract but would not force a merge of the companies or seniority list.

Once you remove the financial disparity by implementing a single contract you've taken away the incentive to keep the airlines separate, however, so the parent company is more likely to merge them.
