At some point you (we) have to draw a line and say, "That's IT! NO MORE!". That line was drawn at 75 hours and worked great for many years, until we took the huge pay/retirement cuts in bankruptcy. I have no argument about what was. The hollow part of the argument is the part that states 'if guys were paid more/hour, they wouldn't need to work as much' In your second paragraph, you advocate going back to the old ways. That would be concessionary to many, ironically, you included.
