In '86 the purchase of (the original) Frontier by United was announced. That same year it was United ALPA that killed the deal publicly and Frontier went under, and all those folks lost their jobs. The general sentiment was that the Frontier pilots had supported United pilots during their contract negotiations, so essentially the Frontier pilots felt double-crossed. That would be lesson being referenced, I believe.
