Once you are approved for global entry you are issued a "known traveler number". This number allows you access to TSA precheck when you include that number in your ticket purchase/ticket listing.
If not in uniform, unless you have a ticket (standby or otherwise) that indicates TSA precheck, at many of the airports I transit, you will not be allowed entry and will be sent to the normal line...even if you show your airline ID.
