In general, that's the best way. Sometimes if the terminal doesn't serve the company you have non rev access to, they tell you to use another checkpoint. JetBlue lets you list online and put your travel ID number so you can get PreCheck when JS. Haven't seen any other company do that.
Outside of KCM, the airline ID is pretty useless out of uniform, unless you get the very occasional nice guy.
