Lots of people log SIC in a single during safety pilot time. Especially if you're 19 years old seeking hours. Of course I've also seen two MEI's double logging multi time by "giving each other dual." Side note on that one: there was an FAA enforcement action on a similar situation a few years back. The Feds deemed it a time building sham and violated them both.
I've never seen anyone with significant civilian time be able to perfectly add up the columns. In 28 years of flying there's stuff I never logged, stuff I never tabulated an individual column for (couple hours in a helicopter and glider- not going to keep scribing a rotor column across 4 logbooks for 5 hrs of time-So my SEL and MEL don't add up to my total), etc. Even given a margin of error of 1% on 9,000 plus hours there's bound to be a slight disparity.
I always loved the "gotta be in black" mentality. If a blue pen disqualifies me, so be it.
Just as an FYI, I'm flying with a guy that does interviews and he told me we just hired a guy that just hit 1500 hours.
