If he gets his conflict the company will be right back to needing it covered. So, Ram makes the company pay more and they still need it covered. Isn't that a win/win? Ya, his motivation is probably selfish but that's not your argument.
I agree with everything you said except the last line. Pretty much as you stated, If a person can pick up a single day trip in the prior month and it results in say dropping four days in following month, it's harder on the company and won't hurt the pilot group at all. I usually have my conflict set up on initial bid, but won't think twice about picking up from open time to create one if need be. I don't think this is being selfish at all. Your not taking any candy from the baby. Pilot wins, pilot group doesn't suffer, company loses.
