Fully agreed. QoL should be the focus as it would like satisfy both camps....
People who want to work more can always wave the limitations in PBS or pick-up extra - most likely at a premium from OT.
People who want to work less can simply work less.
You can always work more by picking up but you cannot "buy back" free time. So you have to protect the free time and leave it up to the pilot on what to do with it.
But this is all theoretical anyway until there is some form of leverage.
