It's comical that the pilots at the airline that bled the legacies into bankruptcy by working like dogs for 30% less wages and benefits pre-9/11 are now beating their chests about "saving" the profession. It's totally fitting that you called it a "profession" with a lower-case "p" because much like those who practice the world's oldest profession you have a skill that people are willing to pay big money for under the right circumstances. It's nothing really to be proud of but the money is too good to pass up.
