As others have stated, the agency you choose is very important. From my experience many of them will promise you the world, but as soon as you sign the contract they basically ignore you. Personally I have not had too many issues, but some friends have had to hire attorneys to get the agency to respond to contractual issues.

That being said, it is quite common for agencies to withhold some information until you provide a CV or sign a promissory letter with them.
