If that were the case, then any FO that met the requirements could apply for year one Captain job at other companies, which would be great. So yes, great idea infoman. It would be just like any other company that posts a job opening. You and a bunch of others would go interview for it and they would select the best candidate for the job.
I have been in the corporate world. It feels good to get promoted for going above and beyond, not for just being there longer. If you don't get promoted or feel you aren't getting paid what you are worth, then you seek other opportunities that will offer what you are worth. My buddy is an engineer, he is doing the same thing right now. He is looking for other opportunities because he knows he can get more salary with his credentials. It also makes a good tool when negotiating a raise. Unfortunately, unions control the airlines so we cannot ask for raises or seek other opportunities (since we have to start all over with seniority). They negotiate the pay for us, signing the contract that pays our new FO's $18k a year and their old timers $100k +. No opportunity for advancement based on credentials, just advancement based on how many wrinkles you have.
