Also what is the cost to have to train other pilots to fly those other positions that these extra pilots could be flying? I'm guessing the cost to just pay 100 WB FOs is a lot more than putting them somewhere they will be productive.
A displacement costs the company plenty. First of all, the pilot is non-productive for about least six weeks, while drawing full pay. A WB F/O probably costs the company at least $20,000/mo. including benefits, so $30,000. The pilot is entitled to a paid move, which can be very expensive to the company if you are moving from IAH to SFO. My last paid move (voluntary bump) from LAX to ORD probably cost the company $25,000 for my max allowed weight move (moving company drivers estimate, I didn't see the company's bill). If you bump from the 787 to the 747 in SFO, you will shortly have another bump as UA retires the 747.

Bumps are a GREAT deal for a pilot, to a large extent because there is no freeze with a bump.
