If they are smart, they want it done before 2019 when all the legacy contracts "me too" clause start taking affect. The asking price just went up after the Allegiant contract happened. Just for a fun rumor that has no support to it. A friend at United said they were looking to buy Spirit because why take over our 319s when they can get them with the company! There have fun with that one.
In my opinion, the company will drag out negotiations as long as possible to "beat down" the union and its members to accept a much smaller raise with many, many concessions just to get that small raise.
As for United, I don't think they have the cash nor could get the loans to get that done. Don't get me wrong, a United takeover would be fine by me; I just don't think they have the cash.
