What else would you call a behavior that drives people to self destruction even though they acknowledge in advance that it will? The definition below came from wikipedia:

An addiction is a recurring compulsion by an individual to engage in some specific activity. The term is often reserved for drug addictions but it is sometimes applied to other compulsions, such as problem gambling, pornography, and compulsive overeating. Factors that have been suggested as causes of addiction include genetic, biological/pharmacological and social factors.

People will compulsively pursue aviation to the destruction of everything else in their lives. Aviation is as addictive as gambling, alcohol or smoking. It is no different.

Problem Flying is an urge to pursue aviation despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. Problem aviation often is defined by whether harm is experienced by the pilot or others, rather than by the pilots behavior or career progression or lack thereof. Severe problem pilots may be diagnosed as clinical pathological aviators if the pilot meets certain criteria:

Is too old to realistically start a flying career.

Married with children.

In debt.

Does not have any significant career contacts.

Has obvious health issues.

Already has a good well paying job.
