anyone notice the latches on top of the engine are up? maybe the cowl wasn't closed and ripped itself apart in flight?
The front cowling (inlet ring) doesn't open...latched portions are aft of the banjo-forging, visible in the incident picture.
Those latches you mentioned probably popped from the likely huge loads/vibration when the inlet ring came off.
