I don't want to start any rumors or ignite any fires over this...the best thing to do is what you have already done. Contact your reps or someone in the union and ask them.
But as far as I know, what you heard is correct. There was someone who was abusing FMLA and *possibly* working a second job while out on leave.
He was asked about it, denied it, asked about it again, denied it again, then confronted with pictures that proved what he was being accused of. I don't know all the details, so I won't speculate...but that's the ballpark. The company had reason to believe he was abusing FMLA and turns out they were correct.
Speaking as someone who has taken FMLA multiple times during my years at Eagle/Envoy...I have to say that if true, this guy is a jack wagon...and I'm only calling him that because the swear filter won't let me call him what he actually is. 99% of us are honest and actually need FMLA from time to time for actual reasons such as the birth of a child. Then along comes this guy, abuses the system, lies about it, and in the process makes all of us look bad. Screw him.
But no...the company is not paying money to have a team of PIs track everyone who calls out sick. Goes to show that if you write it on the internet people will believe just about anything.
