If you don't have a spouse you can designate a companion and they can pay a deeply discount fee to fly standby. This includes any international flight as well. You'll have to pay some taxes when departing most international locations, and they can vary from $15 to $150 a person. Delta you can upgrade to first/business class for free. United you can pay a fee to upgrade, which varies quite a bit. It gets more complicated and I don't feel like explaining the priority you get when non-revving vs. other non-revs.
